About few weeks ago during a conversation with Uncle Jim(Master At Arms James A. Keating of Comtech), we were discussing about how it was difficult to find a decent bowie trainers for the students of Bowie Knife Fighting, from there we were talking about how Charlie Porter used to make trainers for Mr. Szabo(Laci Szabo of Szabo, Inc.), and how were great for training, then from there me and Uncle Jim while still on the phone began searching for Charlie on the web, we couldn't find him via web, then Uncle Jim found a business listing for Glory Knife Works in Denton Texas, from there I made the call, and guess who answered; it was Charlie Porter.
Whenever I heard his name, whether it was from Uncle Jim, Laci Szabo, or my old pal Nick; I heard nothing but good things about this gentlemen. Uncle Jim told me how Charlie is a Riddler(Alumni of Uncle Jim's Riddle of Steel Seminars) and a fellow Martial Artist(similar background too).
Charlie and I talked about how we(the House) needed some bowie trainers and he said no problem, and few days later I received a e-mail from Charlie with a photo of a newly crafted Texas Bowie Trainer; 12" Aluminum Blade with Simulated Blade Grinds(including simulated back edge!!), Minor Fighting Guard, and Wooden Handle, for me this blade was love at first sight, I immediately replied to Charlie that this is what I was looking for, so the search was over, and I placed in a order for 7 of these awesome trainers.
A week later, these blades were completed and ready, and a week after they were in my hands thanks to the wonderful craftsmanship of Charlie Porter.
I've been playing, I am sorry training with these for about a week and a half now, and I can say that these are so realistic one can not tell the difference from a distance, this allows my students to develop confidence which will later allow them to use a live bowie without fear when in executing techniques such as back cuts and snap cuts.
The wooden handle fits my hands like a glove and bonds to it that allow me to apply extremely quick snaps and back cuts that frightens my students during training.
At cost of 80 dollars, some may say that’s too much, in my honest answer; it is worth every dollar!! These are art at work and is worth its cost, allowing the training individuals to develop necessary muscle and technical skills that will allow him or her to use the weapon trained to its full potential without fear or hesitation when transitioning from a trainer to a live blade.
I highly recommend Charlie and his fine crafted trainers to any practitioners who are in serious need of trainers that are work of art(it pains me to ding these during training).
Charlie does not have a website but here is his phone number(1-940-382-9558), call him up get yourself one of these trainers, for study call Uncle Jim(www.jamesakeating.com) for a Comtech Bowie DVD(Highly Recommend anyone of them, but for start I'd say 1, 2, and 3 be best), if you live locally and want to train with me for Bowie with these Awesome Trainers, contact me at www.houseofblackdragonsociety.com.
